Corbu, "Everything You Imagine Is Real" (Big Picnic)
March 27, 2015
I feel like I’m in an 80s space movie, but I’m surprisingly OK with that
Corbu is more than a band—they are the audio and visual art project of British creative mastermind Jonathan Graves. The growing collective creates retro-futuristic sounds to accompany their equally astonishing visual displays. “Neon Hallways” was conceived in the group’s collaboration with visual artist Sean Augustine March, and its active synths are meant to be accompanied by a display of fluorescent lasers shot through seemingly endless mirrors. Aside from gaudy lights, Everything You Imagine Is Real’s first track rockets listeners decades into the past with its sweeping synthesizers and old-school beats. Then, once we realize we’ve landed back in 1983, its super easy to groove out to these relaxing and catchy tracks. “Colony Life” is a driving instrumental track, followed up by the old-style hypnotic dancefloor filler “Black KnightÛ. Downtempo “Promise Me” is a final smooth chaser to an already well-polished pill, as its reassuring synth comforts listeners into remembering that this is just the beginning of Corbu’s artistic rise.
The album also contains radio edits of “Neon Hallways” and “Promise MeÛ, but these edits just cut out all the fun of the 80s interstellar feel. The other remixes on the EP, though, are worth talking about. Ditching the original composition’s generic indie-rock feel, TC’s remix explores dubstep (semi-successfully), Waifs and Stray’s remix pulls on 20th century dance influences, and Autograf’s remix uses tasteful percussion to create a relaxing, foreign vibe.
