Amason, "Sky City" (Fairfax Recordings)

Taking acid in the Amazon Rainforest (in the 80s)

From Pontus Winnberg of electronic trio Miike Snow and various other stragglers of other groups, Amason was born. And I suppose if you were to do acid in the Amazon Rainforest in an 80s movie, any song on Sky City could potentially be part of the soundtrack. It‰’s not exactly my style, but I can appreciate it. There is noticeable talent among the artists. The drumming in the first track, “Ìãlgen,‰” is first, impressive, and second, like a very low-key sample of the drumming found in “Funnybones & Lazylegs‰” by contemporary jazz/electronic group Xploding Plastix. Alongside the percussion, though, is some sort of string synthesis found in the second half of the song. It‰’s a magnanimous buildup for the weird Darth Vader-ish chorus. Don‰’t mistake the hybrid of voices with the main singer, though. Amanda Bergman is easily the star of the group. Her soft and gentle yet seductively alluring voice contrasts well with the intense rigidness of Amason‰’s eccentric electronica.
