Listens of the Week: BreakBot & LXURY

Jeff Greenberg

BreakBot

I‰’d like to write about the electronic funk producer BreakBot, who, in 2009 got signed to Ed Banger Records. This 34-year-old French DJ adds a distorted aspect to classic funk music, and makes it feel current by using syncopation, and digital crunchiness. It‰’s as if A Taste of Honey, The Doobie Brothers, and Michael Jackson came together, and had a baby named BreakBot. It‰’s a weird name for a baby, but Kim and Kanye named their baby after a direction found on a compass.

Most of his music falls around 128 BPM, which is perfect speed for dance music. He uses a stinger base pluck both to give the beat a funkier groove, and to reintroduce that type of 60‰’s nostalgic funk sound. The background vocals consist of heavy reverbed “Ooo” and “ahh”s liked an Earth Wind And Fire song.

This is some music that your parents and you will definitely find intriguing. Maybe they won‰’t fight with you about changing the music in the car. Here‰’s a link to his most current album.

LXURY

Andy Smith, or LXURY, is based out of London and is 21 years old. Similar to the band Disclosure, LXURY is an independent artist, but came out with a song called J.A.W.S. in collaboration with Disclosure in 2011, which gained him fame.

His new EP Playground has a combination of deep house claps and kicks, followed by deep house base sounds and backbeat chord airiness. He adds reverb to the vocals, as comparable to the artist Wave Racer. He uses the vocal as a way to act as the chord itself so that it synchs with the song. He is very comparable to Disclosure and XXYYXX, but different in that he uses high-cut high hats, and hip hop claps. He also uses a Sculpture setting synth (Logic Pro X reference) when he lays over the main chord progression.

Though this artist has not much music out there today, he is definitely worth listening to, and that should peak your interest in this artist.
