Zen Palette: An Exclusive Interview with Moving Castle

Holly Kaplan

You’ll always be able to find the squad lingering in the WVAU studio now with a can of QT.

If you listen to my Sunday radio show Smoove Grooves, you might find that at least one song I play is usually from an artist that’s part of the Internet-based, electronic music collective  Moving Castle.

The Sunday before their much anticipated D.C. showcase at U Street Music Hall by Closed Sessions and Nu Androids, I was able to catch up with most of the members of Moving Castle who were performing that night and interviewed them on my radio show. Here’s what’s happening with  Manila Killa (Chris G.), Robokid (Ethan B.), Hunt For The Breeze (Faysal M.), Dirty Chocolate (Emmanuel O.), Yung Wall Street (Andrew A.) and TJANI.

Here’s a short transcript of a snippet of the interview:

WVAU: What‰’s some upcoming stuff for you guys?

Manila Killa: Well, we just put out our latest compilation a few weeks ago, so that was a big landmark. In addition to that, we also played at SXSW. Unfortunately I wasn‰’t there, but everyone else was.
Robokid: SXSW went really well. It was crazy; we played two shows there. Porter Robinson came through for our NEST HQ showcase which was sick…and Sweater Beats played too. Keith Ape came through, but that was when they kicked everyone out. It was at capacity.
Hunt for the Breeze: Yeah, we had the fire marshals there. But TJANI and Porter played this crazy set so that was extra rare.

WVAU: Any other upcoming festivals?

Manila Killa: I‰’m playing at Firefly at the end of June in Delaware. That‰’s going to be fun.
Robokid: Some of the crew will be playing some other festivals, possibly at Splashhouse in Palm Springs and TBD festival too. All in talks, but we‰’re gonna be doing a lot more showcases here and trying to get everyone out.

WVAU: So, are you working on Volume 5 already?

Manila Killa: We’ve thought about it.
Hunt for the Breeze: There‰’s a funny story ‰ÛÒ our first successful submission we had ‰ÛÒ Ethan [Robokid], found this artist who submitted a demo…
Robokid: …Treehaus, he‰’s really talented. We go through all the emails and listen to all the submissions. A lot of the stuff is really good, but we heard his voice [Treehaus] and we were really impressed and then Faysal [Hunt For The Breeze] made a track with him. His submission got on Volume 4; that was the first track. We check the submissions; we had to cut a lot of tracks from Volume 4 too, which was sad, but Volume 5 should be cool. We have a lot of ideas. So, we just need to figure it out.
Hunt for the Breeze: We get tons of submissions so it‰’s just really cool and we‰’re always eager to hear new sounds.
Robokid: We even get Snapchat submissions too ‰ÛÒ they‰’re usually the most fire.
Hunt for the Breeze: Yeah, we were at the Marriott with Aluko, [Andrew/Yung Wall Street] and Ethan, and this guy submitted something super crazy on Snapchat.

WVAU: Are you thinking about adding more people…or is there a cap?

Robokid: No, there‰’s not ‰ÛÒ we‰’re just..building an empire…(laughs) But, we want to focus on who we have right now; we have a lot of guys who we want to have more exposure. So we‰’re working on that; that‰’s our main focus right now

WVAU: Are any of you from the West Coast?

Yung Wall Street: No, we don‰’t have any West Coast.
Manila Killa: It‰’s funny because our biggest fanbase seems to be the West Coast like L.A., but none of us are from there. So it‰’s really interesting.
Hunt for the Breeze: That and London. Most of our Soundcloud listeners are from London and L.A.
Robokid: That‰’s half the reason why we all want to go out there [L.A.] right now, just because we want to go see everyone and hang out with people who like our music.
Hunt for the Breeze: Yeah, at our showcase, we had a bunch of producers come to our show in L.A. like Madeux and Dr. Fresch, Nightmare…Everyone was just so supportive so we were really grateful for that.

Manila Killa: We‰’re also thinking of upcoming merchandise, more shirts; we have collaborations in the works with OWSLA, we’re working on something with Skrillex…
