Live in the Hive: Ex Hex

1645_img_6858_copyf.jpg On September 20th, Ex Hex graced the WVAU studio for a wonderful session filled with riffs, harmonies, and appetizers. It’s astonishing how much has changed for the band in the mere 3 weeks since the session. They’ve embarked on a countrywide tour with Speedy Ortiz (who also did an “in-studio with us”:http://www.wvau.org/blog/hive/2014/02/live-in-the-hive-speedy-ortiz-two-inch-astronaut-grass-is-green), had their album cover displayed in the center of “Times Square”:https://www.facebook.com/174274669425857/photos/a.232112943642029.1073741834.174274669425857/314309305422392/?type=1, and have received wide spread critical acclaim including a “5/5 from _The Guardian_”:http://www.theguardian.com/music/2014/oct/09/ex-hex-rips-review, a “9/10 from _Exclaim_”:http://exclaim.ca/Reviews/PopAndRock/ex_hex-ex_hex_rips, and a “Best New Music designation from Pitchfork”:http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/19891-ex-hex-rips/. Even with this nationwide attention, Ex Hex are distinctly DC. Laura Harris, drummer, gives the best summation of why the District is their home by simply stating “it works”. Something special seems to happen whenever Mary, Laura, and Betsy are in the same room; veterans of the area and music industry coming together to make something new and exciting, yet instantly recognizable. You’ll hear hints of classic bands like Richard Hell & The Voidoids, T. Rex, and Slant 6, as well as their own past bands Helium, Wild Flag, Childballads, Chain & The Gang, The Aquarium, Autoclave, and more (quite the impressive back catalog I must say). It all comes together perfectly in the glam-punk that is Ex Hex. With that, WVAU is happy to present both our audio stream and video of our Live in the Hive session with Ex Hex.
