“Dream-grunge‰Û

Terrorbird Radio described Weed‰’s sound as “dream-grunge,‰Ûand  I think that‰’s very accurate. There‰’s a lot in their music that speaks to the dark, cold climate of the Pacific Northwest (I think, although I‰’ve never lived there) while drawing from the droney shoegaze of bands like MBV. As for the sound of their sophomore LP Running Back, it sounds a little like Beach House vocals layered over the sound of Dinosaur Jr. The drums are loud and complex with unique rhythmic accentuation which compliments the gloomy, distorted, open, guitar. The song garnering a lot of support of the record, “Yr Songs‰” is almost gothic sounding, in a melodic sense, and very stormy. Nevertheless, the roughness on the exterior harbors a pretty poppy song. “Thousand Pounds‰” has a very clear melody that bites the wavy guitar. “Muscles‰” starts the album off in a really strong way showing off their intense and ominous guitar playing. In that same song(and also “Never Leave) singing turns into shouting which catches the listener by surprise but nevertheless adds another level of intensity that deepens their sound in such a profound way.
