A heart-wrenching catharsis of an album

Bury Me at Makeout Creek starts off with false impressions… the beginning of the opening song, “Texas Reznikoff‰” sounds melancholic, slow, and quiet, luring one into the assumption that this album will be one of those dull singer/songwriter types. Never have I been so wrong. “Reznikoff‰” erupts into this huge, angry noise of clanging drums and chugging guitars, and doesn‰’t stop for virtually the rest of the album. The vocals of Mitski are soft and ethereal, and are juxtaposed by the rough, serrated instrumentals. Though perplexing, the sound combination really makes you feel something. Certain songs, like “Drunk Walk Home‰” and “Carry Me Out‰” make me imagine sitting in the center of a stadium and shrieking my grievances out at everyone and anyone who‰’s ever pissed me off. This album is therapeutic; and ends as softly as it began, giving you closure to any angst you might be going through.
