Pompeii, "Loom" (Red Eye Transit)

Deanna Mudry

Expansive, sparkly atmosphere album.

Loom by Pompeii is a vast wasteland of twinkly mood music from start to finish. Most songs are soft rhythmic tunes that lead up to big, big endings, but the album also maintains balance with the slightly rougher, fast, tight drumming on “Frozen Planet‰” and “Blueprint.‰”

Songs on the album like “Sleeper‰” and “Ekspedition‰” have a lot of buildup and then burst into a sort of dreamlike state. Most of the songs start and end with this pattern, which make it lose its effect a little bit, but it‰’s not entirely a bad thing.

Lyrics of desolation and cynicism like “It‰’s better staying at home, laying in bed, sleeping in my clothes/ And I don‰’t care‰” intertwine with the colossal music making Loom a very listenable, human experience despite the attempts at larger than life musical atmosphere.

This is the music that plays in a movie as Keira Knightley looks at you through the English fog, or when the Polar bear couple reunite at the end of the HD nature documentary. But, it could also be the soundtrack to your life.
