Leading Ladies: Three New U.K. Artists You Should Know

Teta Alim

1. Rainy Milo

Last year, this 18-year-old London native made her debut with her jazz and hip-hop fusion mixtapeåÊLimey, produced with the help of some established artists like Oddisee and Chet Faker to name a few. A recent graduate of the BRIT School, Milo describes herself as “a physical collection” of her influences, citing N.E.R.D., Amy Winehouse and Corinne Bailey Rae as inspirations. She has written songs since she was 14, writing mostly for her own pleasure rather than for an audience. Now as a signed artist, she’s poised to release a full album soon but meanwhile,åÊLimey is still available to download for free.

2. Roses Gabor

After lending her unique vocals to tracks for SBTRKT and Gorillaz, this London-based artist is finally forging her own path in the music industry. Signed onto Girls’ Music, the record label of well-known Sheffield DJ and producer Toddla T, Gabor released her first single “Stars” just last year. Smoothly blending her sultry vocals over electronic, dance-like beats, Gabor’s music is not only fit for clubbing but also for those quiet, midnight drives through endless country roads. Her cosmic soul music and her futuristic style has likened her to Janelle MonÌÁe but she’s a bit skeptical of such praise.

3. Josephine Oniyama

Born in Manchester to a Liberian mother and Jamaican father, Josephine Oniyama attributes a lot of her musical style and influences to her West African roots. At the age of 12, she started playing guitar and by 15, she was already playing a few gigs. After sharing the stage as a back-up player for Paolo Nutini and Michael Kiwanuka, Oniyama released her debut albumåÊPortrait last year and toured with Paloma Faith as well as having her own headlining tour around the U.K. The singer-songwriter’s soulful folk and rock music has been garnering praise in her home country and will hopefully be able to spread her eclectic musical style throughout the world.
