SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE: Frankie Cosmos

Amelia Covington

Frankie Cosmos, headed by Greta Kline, is an indie pop/jangle pop superstar, producing short, bouncy, and monumentally vibrant songs. The first time I heard Frankie Cosmos, I was immediately captivated, though I hadn‰’t yet decided what I thought of Greta‰’s shy voice. Now, I adore almost every song Frankie Cosmos has produced- even the 30-second songs posted on bandcamp back in 2011 evoke intense emotions (note: YOU GOT THE WRONG GIRL MY HAIR AND LIPS ARE DIFFERENT COLOURS from amnesia the fifth). The best way I know how to describe Frankie Cosmos‰’ lyrics is sparse, but powerful. Frankie Cosmos does not attempt to illustrate a meticulously detailed narrative but provides space for the audience to glean what they may from her words. One of my favorite examples of this is “Outside with the Cuties,‰” a song from her latest album, New Thing. Toward the end of the song, she simply asks, “I haven‰’t written this part yet/Will you help me write it?‰” This invitation to participate in her music, to embody her world of love, friendship, and angst seems to say that her music would be incomplete without the listener. Having seen Frankie Cosmos perform twice already, I can also attest to the way she commands a room, turning formerly raucous audience members into mesmerized beings of light. With a wavering voice that proclaims feelings of unsteadiness felt by everyone at some time in their young lives, Frankie Cosmos is truly alluring. To anyone who loves fun, twinkly jams sprinkled with a hint of nostalgia, please do yourself a favor and listen to Frankie Cosmos.
