The Tough Crowd: In the Bin at Joint Custody

Christina Kelly

I learned the hard way that Easter Sunday isn‰’t exactly the best time to go record shopping. Luckily, punk rock never takes a break and Joint Custody was open till 8pm. This stroke of fate was good for this article but bad for my wallet. Now, since my 1970‰’s dollar bin finds have completely taken over my record cabinet, leaving me in need of more record storage, I decided to forego Joint Custody‰’s dollar bin for the buy-however-many-get-some-free deal. In lieu of dollar deals I opted for pricier 7‰Û‰’s that would take up less precious storage space.

The Store

Joint is a tried and true store for pretty much anything you could ever want. It‰’s clean, organized, has the best selection of any store in DC and even has a vast selection of vintage sports apparel. Are you looking for all of the Belle and Sebastian represses? Got it. Have a need for a classic ’80s hip hop? Covered. Happen to be in the market for a $500 Minor Threat record? They‰’ve got that too. Walking into Joint Custody means that the budget I set for myself on the way there is completely destroyed within six minutes of flipping through racks. Actually, it was ruined before I even finished the 7‰” section, which here is small but the quality over quantity here is high. I walked in with the goal of only spending my self imposed $10 limit and left with four records and a $36 receipt. Oops.

The Finds

Propagandhi- How to Clean a Couple o‰’ Things

I know this is supposed to be about things I haven’t heard before, and Propagandhi certainly doesn’t fall in that category, but I wanted this one and I had never heard this EP and so I think that counts at least a little bit. As expected this was enjoyable to listen to. In case this classic isn’t something you’ve heard before, it’s basically an angrier NOFX.

Rule of Thirds – s/t

The sticker on this one described it as New Aussie Goth Punk and since I know completely nothing about goth punk I thought Id give it a try. Turns out its pretty good. Its dark and kind of sassy sounding so naturally something I’m into.

The Lazy Cowgirls- The Long Goodbye

First off, this has great album art so no automatically no regrets on this purchase. Second, this is entirely different than what I anticipated. I couldn’t tell you what specific genre this is. The first song sounded more classic rock than anything else upon first listen, but then the second track definitely had punk influences so I really don’t know. Nice to listen to but not the greatest thing there is.

Overall Verdict

The store was great as usual, although this weeks picks weren’t my favorite but solid nonetheless.
